South-west
of Cape Panwa, is an island sanctuary administrated by the Department
of Fisheries. A glimpse of the white sandy beach can be seen from
Chalong Bay and Rawai Beach. The main program is snorkeling. You
can take a boat from either Chalong or Rawai or contact a tour agent
for a package tour. There are two beaches on the island at the north
and on the east, which are now upgraded with accommodations and
restaurants to cater to the hundreds of daily visitors who arrive
on conducted tours. Being one of the
closet islands to Phuket with abundant coral reefs and shallow water
suitable for snorkeling Coral Island is inundated with visitors
every day and this has led to a serious deterioration in the condition
of the reefs. The overall condition of the reefs will still excite
the novice snorkeler, but a serious diver will opt for other dive
sites.
The deeper water on the lee side of Coral Island
has coral reefs used by scuba divers during the monsoon season,
when strong south westerly winds make diving in many of the more
popular dive sites around Phuket's other sites undesirable.
