This
646 sq km national park is in the western part of Surat Thani Province,
off Route 401, less than 3 hours from Phuket. The park features
thick native rainforest with waterfalls, limestone cliffs, numerous
rivers and streams, an enchanting island studded lake, and many
well-maintained trails for hiking. Khao Sok is the largest nature
preserve on the Thai Peninsula, and shelters a huge variety of wildlife
including wild elephant, leopard, serow, banteng, guar, dusky langur,
tiger Malayan sun bear and over 175 bird species. In 1986 Slorms
stork -- a new species for Thailand was confirmed.
Entrance to the park is 30 baht; the rangers also
take jungle tours and/or rafting trips for 150 baht per day. Khao
Sok has a camping area and several places to stay. The national
park has a house with rooms for 350 baht. Tents can be rented for
50 baht per person. Along with the camping area at the park headquarters,
there are several private bungalow operations featuring tree-house
style accommodation. A small restaurant near the entrance serves
inexpensive meals.
Day tips from Phuket to Khao Sok National Park
are now very popular with travelers and are offered by a growing
number of travel companies.
